Influences

I come from a rock/ alternative/ post-punk/ and hip-hop background growing up. Lately I’ve been Into mellow and soulful artists such as Sam Cooke, Jimmy Smith, Nelson Riddle, Billy Holiday, Duke Ellington, Sinatra, Beverly Kenny, Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, Gordon Jenkins and many more late night tunes.

That said, I really bounce between variations of most genres. I can be enjoying Leonard Cohen or Donovan, then move onto German Krautrock like Ashra or Agitation Free, then into Curtis Mayfield or Ohio Players, that might be followed by Nine Inch Nails or Fields of The Nephilim, after maybe head to Africa and listen to Blick Bassy, Tinariwen or Bombino, then detour to Latin America and enjoy Natalia Lafourcade, Gustavo Cerati, or Bomba Estéreo, I might jump to Japan after and enjoy some Happy End, Cornelius or Yellow Magic Orchestra. Throw a stone to India and put on Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar or something more contemporary like Parekh & Singh, after might feel like hearing some Mississippi John Hurt or Muddy Waters...

...I can continue but if you’ve read this far I think you get the point. I find sticking to one (or few) genre of influence is like eating only one style of food... it might be great, but why limit yourself? There’s plenty to appreciate and be inspired by in every genre, and a ton of crap to sift through as well, but that’s half the fun digging for that next voice or sound that captivates you.
