Influences
In terms of genre, I am most interested in six different types (but please, I am not saying that I will turn my back on others, but these are just my faves.)
They are all mostly based on where I like to sing, I am a Bass Baritone vocalist primarily (where it is most comfortable) but I can push into Tenor and Falsetto ranges too!
Prog:
I have recently got together with a groups of guys who have introduced me to contemporary progressive metal, and they all tend to have highly complex rhythmic form and structure and I have been hugely drawn to it ever since recently. though my examples above aren't exactly the genre, I find this music incredibly beautiful and unique. It has changed my perception of songwriting and I wish to pursue it further.
Example bands: TesseracT; Devin Townsend Project; Haken; Leprous; Caligula's Horse; Karnivool; Tool; Opeth;
Gothic/Industrial Rock/Metal
I like this type of music family I suppose because I can emotionally relate to it a bit, it is very expressive and can be very powerful, greatly augmenting the stage presence of a band if done correctly. Also I can get involved with it a lot more in terms of its production.
Example Bands; Type O Negative, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Marilyn Manson, Bauhaus, Rammstein.
Electronic/R&B Contemporary
Music like Trap, Neo-Soul, Hip Hop (anything that is sort of current)/ That sort of 'indie' sound. We all want to be at some degree the cool kids, making this type of music is what brings in the wider audience, so I will not turn my back on this type of music.
Example Bands and Artists; Erykah Badu; Lauryn Hill; En Vogue; SWV; Jill Scott
Pseudo-Classical Music
Scoring and Composing orchestral music is quite stimulating. Most of the music I make comprises of some sort of element that fits this. I started originally at High School and University singing classical songs and opera stuff, though it never really interested me nor did I really fit in with that crowd. But because of my exposure to it and what kind of standard it conveys, it is an untapped source of expressive power in music that is very underutilized in most contemporary music. (understandable that most live music can't replicate it, thus unrealistic.)
90s sounds
Post Grunge Music like Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains. Probably better as a lead vocalist, I like to rock these types of music in the car, and you can jump straight into performing music like this and people tend to enjoy it.
Contemporary country music/art rock/blues
I only recently have been drawn to this, a lot of this music likes a person with a deeper voice like mine, but also the aesthetic of the music has interested me. artists like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, some of Adele, Wynonna Judd etc fall into this. This music has some balls to it.
