ABOUT

A diverse musician with a unique perspective, Brisbane based saxophonist Lee Brackenborough has been a part of a variety of music projects in the 10 years he’s been playing. Recently completing a Bachelor of music in jazz performance at JMI, where he studied under musicians: Graeme Norris, Bruce Woodward, Helen Russel and Sean Foran, Lee combines warm tone and expressive melodies with his quirky personality to engage the audience.

Lee spent his first several years on sax studying classical music, taking AMEB performance and theory exams while working with groups such as the Logan Youth Music Exchange program(Where he toured Japan and Taiwan) and the QYO Wind Ensemble (performing at the 2004 Sydney International Music Festival) before shifting to contemporary styles with a focus in jazz.

Experienced at performing in a variety of styles and line-ups Lee has played many venues around Brisbane: The Hi-Fi, The Zoo, Judith Wright Centre, The Globe, The turnaround, Ric's, The Step inn as well as the 2011 Valley Jazz Festivals emerging artist stage and support gigs for the Louise Denson trio, Andrew Shaw, and the Dan Quigley quintet.

Lees’ current focus is on writing and arranging with influences from groups like the Allan Browne Quintet(the Drunken Boat), Ben Winkleman Trio, Charlie Hunter Trio, Andrea Keller Quartet, Steve Coleman, Esperenza Spalding and Wayne Shorter. “I was interested in experimenting with different time signatures, Latin grooves, and less conventional forms, having more of a focus on arrangements. I also find a lot of inspiration in piano trios and the amount of interaction between the players. I’ve tried to keep that idea of collective improvisation in mind and take it to different line-ups.“

Lee currently teaches Saxophone, theory and piano from his home studio while performing regurlarly in Brisbane and surrounding areas with plans to continue as a freelance performer, composer and teacher.

Aavailable for: session work, gigs, tuition, weddings, parties, functions.
