Saxophone.ABOUT
Drummer, jazz guitarist.
My first band experience was in 1971 as a rhythm guitarist. I also had a keen interest in drums and took up drum lessons in 1972 (which introduced me to reading drum scores right from the get go), playing as a rhythm guitarist in some bands and a drummer in others.
Around the early 80s I began to look at the remote possibility of becoming a jazz guitarist. Basically, I wanted to play piano on guitar - to play melody and chords (or lead and rhythm) on the one instrument. These days, I like the challenge of playing jazz fusion styles such as jazz/rock and jazz/funk or just trying to 'master' some of the jazz 'standards'.
As for drumming, I just crank up a heap of my favourite bands and jump on the kit - just for fun.
I have no wish to join a band, however there are many times when playing a few jazz pieces on guitar (Take Five, Ipanema etc), I wish I knew a saxophonist (with strong improvisational skills) who could present his/her interpretation of the melody while hopefully being supported by some solid rhythm guitar - just for fun.
Alternatively, when playing the drums I often wonder what sort of sound could be produced if my drums were complemented by a funky bass and a jazz pianist.
Ultimately, I'm looking for people around my own age (50 plus) who have some spare time and who enjoy playing jazz in a relaxed environment between 10 a.m and 6 p.m.
